Image by Lanzen The Kumtagh Desert ("kum tag" means "sand mountain" in Uighur) is a section of the Taklamakan Desert which lies east-southeast of the Desert of Lop. With the Altyn-Tagh to the south, its eastern edige just beyond the Gansu border, it is over 2500 square kms. In the North-East corner lies the Jade Gate (or Yumen Pass); the wastern end of the Great Wall and the symbolic gate between Central Asia and China. The Kumtagh Desert is expanding and threatening to engulf previously productive lands with its arid wasteland character, as a result of centuries of overgrazing of the region. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumtagh_Desert
